How to Play a 4-3-3 Soccer Formation
This historical page should answer the practical question: what should each player actually do?
For a deeper tactical overview, use 4-3-3 Soccer Formation.
Goalkeeper
Give the center backs an angle, recognize when to play short and when pressure requires a longer option.
Center backs
Split in build-up, protect the center in transition and avoid both stepping toward the same opponent.
Fullbacks
Coordinate with the winger. If the winger stays wide, the fullback may underlap or support underneath. If the winger comes inside, the fullback can overlap.
Number 6
Stay available behind the first line of pressure and protect the space in front of the center backs when attacks break down.
Number 8s
Create different heights. One can move forward while the other supports. Avoid standing on the same horizontal line all the time.
Wingers
Stretch the field when needed, attack the fullback 1v1 and make diagonal runs when the opposite side has time to cross or switch.
Striker
Threaten behind, show for passes into feet, link attacks and lead the first press.
Team rule in possession
Create width, depth and at least one safe support option behind the ball.
Team rule out of possession
Front three and midfield three must remain connected. If the forwards press 20 yards ahead of midfield, the opponent will play through the gap.
Simple coaching exercise
Play 7v7 with two neutral wide players. Score a bonus point when a team connects through the central midfielder before using a wide player.
