Passing squares is a basic soccer passing drill used mainly with younger and beginner players. The square is contained and helps players visualize where they should pass and move to. Passes are completed in a straight line allowing players to focus on technique.
Suggested Age Groups
- U8 to U12: Focus on basic passing accuracy and movement.
- U13 and up: Emphasize quicker passing, decision-making, and under-pressure play.
Organization
- Setup: Create a square (20×20 yards) using cones. If working with younger players or beginners, reduce the size of the square (15×15 yards).
- Players: Minimum 5 Players per square. Position one player on each corner of the square with two players on the cone where the ball starts. If playing with more than five players you can back two players up on other cones and have players wait.
- Balls: You can start with one ball, then add a second ball for more advanced groups or groups with six or seven players.
- Time: Each round should last 2-3 minutes, with rotations after each round.
How to Play
- Players start by passing the ball around the square in a clockwise or counterclockwise direction.
- After passing, players must immediately move to the next cone in a counterclockwise direction.
- The next player on the receiving end must check their shoulder, receive the ball with the inside of their foot, and pass it to the next player.
- As players become comfortable, add a second ball to increase the difficulty and tempo.
- To further challenge players, introduce a defender in the middle of the square who tries to intercept passes, encouraging quicker and more precise passing.
Why to Play
- Passing Accuracy: This drill emphasizes precise passing, a fundamental skill in soccer.
- Movement Off the Ball: Players learn the importance of moving after making a pass to create space and provide passing options.
- Decision Making: As the pace increases, players must think quickly to decide where and how to pass.
- Communication: Encourages verbal and non-verbal communication among players, which is essential during games.
Coaching Points
- Pass with Purpose: Players should focus on the weight and accuracy of their passes, aiming for their teammate’s preferred foot.
- Quick Transitions: After making a pass, players should immediately move to the next cone, emphasizing quick transitions and readiness.
- Body Positioning: Players should receive the ball with their body open to the field, allowing for a smooth transition to the next pass.
- Head Up: Encourage players to keep their heads up before receiving the ball to scan the field and make better decisions.
Further Progressions
- Two-Touch Maximum: Limit players to two touches—one to control and one to pass. This increases the pace and challenges their first touch.
- Add a Defender: Introduce one or two defenders inside the square who try to intercept the passes. This forces the attacking players to pass quickly and accurately.
- Directional Change: Change the direction of the passes periodically or on the coach’s command to challenge the players’ adaptability.
- Passing Patterns: Introduce specific passing patterns, such as passing diagonally across the square or to the opposite corner, to vary the drill and emphasize different aspects of passing.
Equipment Needed
- 4 Cones: To mark the corners of the square and create a defined area for the drill.
- 2 Balls: Begin with one ball, but have additional balls ready for progressions.
- Training Bibs: To differentiate between players if defenders are introduced.
This drill is versatile and can be adapted for various age groups and skill levels. It’s excellent for reinforcing fundamental soccer principles and can be scaled in difficulty as players progress.
