4-3-3 Soccer Formation Diagram
A static 4-3-3 diagram is only the starting picture. The most useful way to read it is by relationships.
Back four
Fullbacks start outside the center backs, but their attacking height depends on the winger and midfield.
Midfield triangle
The 6 usually begins deeper than the two 8s. The triangle should not collapse into three players standing in one line.
Front three
Wingers provide width or attack inside depending on fullback movement. The striker occupies the center backs and changes depth.
Five attacking lanes
In possession, a team often tries to occupy:
- left wing;
- left half-space;
- center;
- right half-space;
- right wing.
Five players do not need to stand on one line, but occupying different lanes stretches the defense.
Defensive compactness
When defending, wide players narrow enough to protect central passes while remaining ready to press the outside.
Use the diagram in coaching
Move magnets after every pass. Ask:
- who gives width?
- who supports behind?
- who threatens depth?
- who protects transition?
That turns the diagram into a model of decisions rather than fixed dots.
