5v5 Soccer Formations
In 5v5, one player is normally the goalkeeper, leaving four outfield players.
The small numbers mean rigid positions are less important than spacing and transition.
1-2-1 diamond
One defender, two wide/midfield players and one forward.
Strengths: clear width and depth, useful passing angles.
Weakness: the single defender can be exposed if everyone attacks.
2-1-1
Two defenders, one central midfielder, one forward.
Strengths: extra security and clear central connection.
Weakness: width must come from movement.
1-1-2
One defender, one midfielder, two forwards.
Strengths: aggressive attacking shape.
Weakness: transition defense can be fragile.
Coaching priorities
At small-sided ages, teach:
- move away from teammates to create space;
- help behind and beside the ball;
- react immediately after possession changes;
- rotate roles;
- avoid permanent “goal hanger” positions.
Simple game
Play 4v4 plus goalkeepers. Freeze only when necessary to show width, depth or support. Let players restart quickly.
