8v8 Soccer Formation Diagrams
Eight-a-side soccer uses eight players including the goalkeeper, so the outfield shape contains seven players.
Common options include 3-3-1, 2-3-2 and 3-2-2.
3-3-1
Three defenders, three midfielders, one striker.
Good for: clear lines, defensive stability, simple width.
Watch: striker can become isolated.
2-3-2
Two defenders, three midfielders, two forwards.
Good for: attacking numbers and central combinations.
Watch: the two defenders need strong support when possession is lost.
3-2-2
Three defenders, two central midfielders, two forwards.
Good for: secure back line and strike partnership.
Watch: natural width can disappear unless outside defenders or forwards move wide.
Which is best?
Choose the shape that makes the learning objective easiest to see. Youth players should still rotate positions.
Building from the goalkeeper
Regardless of shape:
- defenders separate;
- midfielders show on different lines;
- wide players create space;
- goalkeeper scans before the restart.
Defending
Protect the middle first and keep distances manageable. Do not ask one player to chase the ball across the entire field.
