How to Play 3-5-2: Formation Diagrams
This restored historical page is the diagram walkthrough for the broader 3-5-2 Soccer Formation guide.
Base shape
The 3-5-2 starts with:
- three center backs;
- two wing backs;
- three central midfielders;
- two forwards.
In possession: 3-2-5
A common attacking picture keeps the back three, places two midfielders underneath the ball and pushes five players across the attacking line.
The wing backs provide width while forwards and advanced midfielders occupy inside channels.
Defending: 5-3-2
When wing backs recover, the team forms five defenders and three central midfielders.
The two strikers can screen central passes and direct play wide.
Wing-back diagram cue
If the ball is secure on one side:
- near wing back can push;
- far wing back stays connected and may narrow slightly;
- outside center back supports behind;
- midfield slides toward the ball.
Pressing cue
The front two should not chase independently.
One forward presses while the other screens or prepares for the next pass. Midfield squeezes behind them.
Transition danger
The biggest space can appear outside the back three before a wing back recovers.
The nearest midfielder and outside center back must recognize who protects that channel.
Coaching exercise
Use 7v7 plus two neutral wide players. The neutrals always play with the team in possession. This exaggerates the wing-back role and creates the central-to-wide release seen in a 3-5-2.
