U9 Soccer Drills
At U9, the best training environment is active, simple and game-like. Players need many touches and many chances to attack and defend.
1. Dribble through gates
Scatter small gates. Players score by dribbling through as many as possible. Progress to weaker foot or change-of-direction moves.
2. 1v1 to two gates
Each attacker can score through either gate. This encourages the player to look up and attack space rather than run at one fixed target.
3. Passing pairs
Pairs move around the area and pass through gates. Reward a good first touch and moving to a new angle after the pass.
4. 2v1 to target
Two attackers try to reach a target player against one defender. This introduces the simplest overload decision: pass or dribble.
5. 3v3 game
Small numbers create frequent decisions. Use mini goals or end zones. Avoid constant stoppages.
6. Finish after a dribble
Players dribble from different angles and finish into a small goal. Add a passive then active defender.
Coaching U9
Use short cues:
- “look before it comes”;
- “make the field big”;
- “can you turn?”;
- “win it back”;
- “help the player with the ball.”
Keep formal tactical lectures to a minimum. Let the game teach, then intervene briefly when a repeated problem appears.
