4-5-1 Defensive Shape
The 4-5-1 is useful when a team wants numbers across midfield and a clear central striker for transition.
The back four
Stay connected and avoid dropping one defender far behind the others without a reason.
Midfield five
The wide midfielders recover enough to protect the fullbacks. The central three protect passes through the middle.
Lone striker
The striker screens, directs the opponent toward one side and becomes the first counterattacking outlet.
Compactness
The distance from back line to striker must stay manageable. If the striker presses alone, the opponent can play through the open space.
Pressing triggers
Possible triggers:
- backward pass;
- poor first touch;
- receiver facing own goal;
- slow pass toward the touchline;
- isolated fullback.
Counterattack
On regaining the ball:
- striker secures or runs behind;
- nearest midfielder supports;
- far winger can attack space;
- at least one midfielder protects against an immediate turnover.
Exercise
Play 7v7 plus goalkeepers. One team begins every defensive phase in a compact 4-2 block behind one striker. Award extra points for winning the ball and reaching the opposite half within six seconds.
